Fernandez Lands NCAC Weekly Recognition
Apr 24, 2007 MEADVILLE, Pa. – Allegheny College senior Jimmy Fernandez (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) was recently named North Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week by the league office following his performance for the Gators on the baseball field.
Fernandez was nearly perfect in helping Allegheny to six wins in seven games last week, going 14-for-16 (.875 batting average) at the plate in four games. He started the run against Pitt-Bradford, helping the Blue & Gold to an 18-12 win by going 4-for-4 with four runs scored and four RBI.
That was only the beginning for Fernandez, who went to town on the Oberlin College pitching staff over the weekend. After sitting out the opening game, he returned to the lineup as the designated hitter and filled the role to a tee, hitting safely in 10-of-12 at bats, including two 4-for-5 efforts. Fernandez scored five times and plated seven RBI, including a career-high five in game two, as Allegheny managed a doubleheader sweep of the Yeomen on April 22.
Overall on the week, Fernandez drove in 14, while scoring 11 times. He knocked out three doubles and his first home run of the season, totaling 20 bases and a heavenly slugging percentage of 1.250. The Gator designated hitter also walked three times, posting an on-base percentage of .895 on the week.
Allegheny continues the playoff hunt this weekend with its final conference series at home against Kenyon College on April 28-29. But first, the Gators must get by Penn State Behrend in a non-conference doubleheader slated for today (April 24) at 2 p.m.
