Allegheny Racks Up 27 Runs at OWU
April 22, 2007
DELAWARE, Ohio. – One day after managing just seven hits and no runs against league-leading Denison University, the Allegheny College softball team ignited the offense with a little bit of rocket fuel, putting up 27 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Ohio Wesleyan University in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Sunday. The Gators took game one 10-1 before pounding out a 17-1 victory in the nightcap, marking the two most lopsided wins for the visitors in the all-time series.
Allegheny (14-14, 9-3 NCAC) moved into a tie with Wittenberg University (24-10, 9-3 NCAC) for second in the league standings, setting up a 1 p.m. showdown next Saturday (April 28) at Robertson Field in the final regular season conference games for both teams. The two squads trail conference front-runner Denison (23-11, 9-1 NCAC), though the Big Red still have four games remaining against fourth-place Hiram College (17-9, 7-3 NCAC) and last place Oberlin College (1-23, 0-12 NCAC).
As for the games, the outcomes were never in doubt once the Gators grabbed a lead. In the opener, the visitors took an early 1-0 margin in the second inning on a run-scoring single by Abby Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) before opening up the game with a six-run third. Most of the damage came with two outs as Allegheny took advantage of three Bishop errors.
The Blue & Gold added three more runs in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run triple by Stephanie Lasinski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland). The nine-run advantage was more than enough for Alicia Morley (Sinclairville, N.Y./Cassadaga Valley) who stranded a pair of runners in the fifth to pick up her ninth win of the season. She allowed five hits over five innings, surrendering one earned run with four walks and one strikeout.
Bodenlos and Emmalynn Sigrist (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) each finished 1-for-3 with two RBI, the former also stealing her team-best 26th base of the season, while Lasinski tallied two hits in three at bats and plated a game-high three RBI.
Allegheny started quietly in game two, taking a 3-1 advantage with a pair of runs in the third. That was just the beginning as the Gators notched 14 runs in the final three innings, jump-started by a Lasinski solo blast in the fourth. Four more runs crossed the plate in the fifth on a two-run single by Katie Wills (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) and a two-run triple by Abby Bodenlos, but the real fireworks blasted off in the sixth inning, as the visitors tied their season high for runs in an inning by sending nine runners home. Allison Burr (Farmdale, Ohio/Badger) and Rachel Ryan (West Salem, Ohio/Northwestern) each tallied a pair of RBI, the former with a single to right-center and the latter with a double to center field.
Freshman Allison Korotkin (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day) picked up the win, improving her record to 5-3. She allowed just one unearned run to cross the plate, while holding Ohio Wesleyan to four hits, two walks, and striking out five.
All 11 players who entered the game offensively came around to score, with Abby Bodenlos reaching pay-dirt three times thanks to a 2-for-3 effort at the plate. Ryan capped off another impressive outing with a 5-for-5 and four RBI performance in the nightcap. Overall in the doubleheader, the Gator shortstop was 7-for-9 with three runs scored.
Wills finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored in game two, while Abby Bodenlos, Maggie Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy), Rebecca Burns (St. Rogersville, Pa./West Greene), and Allison Burr each plated a pair of runs.
Before Allegheny takes on Wittenberg next weekend, the Gators must first take care of business in a non-conference doubleheader against Bethany College on Thursday, April 26, at 3:30 p.m.
