INDIANA, Pa. – Three Gators, Liz Earley (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), Emily Pfeufer (St. Marys, Pa./Elk County Catholic) and Katie Pankowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) each reached NCAA Division III provisional qualifying marks, with one, Pfeufer, setting a new school record in one of her events, as the team traveled to the Indiana (Pa.) Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Earley took first in the hammer throw with a toss of 158-9, a provisional mark, but under her NCAA automatic qualifying and the nation’s second longest throw of 173-2. Pankowski took second in the javelin throw with a personal best toss of 130-10, meeting the provisional qualifying mark for the first time in her career while Pfeufer, earned provisional qualifying marks in both the long and triple jump, as she earned All-America honors in the latter during the last two NCAA Division III Championships.

The throwing events were dominated by Earley, who in addition to her toss in the hammer, took third in the shot put and fourth in the discus. Her toss of 38-9.75 paced three Gators who met the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) qualifying standard, as Sophia Braden (Farmington, Mich./Roeper) took fourth overall with a personal-best toss of 38-2.75, while Kristen Angelo (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) placed eighth overall. Earley then took fourth in the discus throw (117-1), while her teammates had tosses of 110-5 (Angelo) and 108-5 (Braden).

The javelin throw also saw its share of Allegheny high finishers. In addition to Pankowski, Jessica Pennisi (Milltown, N.J./East Brunswick) and Emily Kiernan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) recorded personal best throws of 109-7 and 108-2, respectively, to place fifth and sixth. Pfeufer finished in eighth place with a best throw of 104-8.

In the long jump, Pfeufer broke the school record she set last season, leaping three inches further, this time to a distance of 18-3.25, while also taking second in the triple jump with a leap of 37-5.25, just behind her leap of 38-0.25 that currently has her ranked fifth in Division III. In addition to her horizontal leaping prowess, Pfeufer also took third in the vertical leaping event, the high jump, clearing a height of 5-1.75.

First-year Hannah Smith (Rice Lake, Wisc./Rice Lake) nearly etched her name in the Allegheny record books, missing the school record in the 100-meter hurdles by a mere .05, placing second in the event in a time of 15.71 while teammates Liz Straus (Kirtland, Ohio/Kirtland) and Jessica Gratton (Bridgeville, Pa./Chartiers Valley) both ran to personal best times of 16.31 and 16.51, respectively. Straus later broke the tape in the 400-meter hurdles, winning the race by nearly two seconds with a personal-best time of 1:06.65 with Heather Knupp (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) not far behind with a time of 1:09.07, taking third overall.

Sophomore Carley Latus (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) met the NCAC qualifying standard in both of her middle-distance events, the 800- and 1,500-meter runs. She ran to a time of 2:23.60 in the 800, taking third overall, while taking eighth in the 1,500, running to a time of 4:58.96. Lindsey Svetlak (Lowellville, Ohio/Lowellville) nearly caught Latus in the longer of the two races, running to a time of 5:02.12 while placing ninth.

Andrea Patterson (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) took fifth in the 3,000-meter steeple chase in a career-best time of 12:30.10.

The Gators have a pair of meets this next weekend, as portions of the squad will go to the Gina Relays in Hillsdale, Mich, while the other portions will go to the Sparky Adams Invite at Baldwin-Wallace College.
