Confer Sets School Record at IUP

INDIANA, Pa. – Senior Pat Confer (Bradford, Pa./Bradford) took second overall in the hammer throw at the Indiana (Pa.) Invitational, tossing the weight a distance of 158-2, nearly eight feet farther than the previous school record set a season ago by Confer.
Confer, Devin Cruea (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) and Frank Tupta (University Heights, Ohio/Hawken) finished well in the throwing events, with Cruea placing third in the hammer throw, 10 feet behind Confer, while also taking first in the discus throw with a distance of 152-6. He and Tupta took third and fourth in the shot put, Cruea with a toss of 47-9 and Tupta 47-8.5, while Confer took sixth with a distance of 45-4.25.
Josh Brannan (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) placed second in the 200-meter dash, sprinting the half-lap in a time of 22.72, while placing fifth in the 100-meter dash, finishing just behind Joe McMahon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and just ahead of Marcus Solomon (Rockwell, Texas/Dallas Christian), as the trio ran times of 11.24, 11.25 and 11.30, respectively. Brannan, Solomon, David Boger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and Chas Moore-Seymore (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Francis) teamed up to take second in the 4x100-meter relay, finishing the one-lap in a time of 42.91.
In addition to his sprinting, McMahon took first in the triple jump with a leap of 45-8, after taking seventh in the long jump, leaping to a distance of 21-6.25.
Matt Smith (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) took second in the 5,000-meter run, finishing the 3.1 miles in a time of 15:40.91, giving the Gators eight North Coast Athletic Conference championship qualifiers in the event.
Sophomore Matt Yurky (Homer City, Pa./Homer-Center) placed third in the 110-meter hurdles in a personal-best time of 15.71, while also reaching a personal best in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 58.36, placing seventh overall.
Garret Piispanen (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument) and Craig Ball (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) placed fifth and sixth with times of 1:56.73 and 1:57.86, respectively, the latter marking a significant personal best for Ball.
The Gators have a pair of meets this next weekend, as portions of the squad will go to the Gina Relays in Hillsdale, Mich, while the other portions will go to the Sparky Adams Invite at Baldwin-Wallace College.
