SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Behind strong efforts from their field events, Allegheny had numerous North Coast Athletic Conference championship qualifying marks. Joe McMahon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and Frank Tupta (University Heights, Ohio/Hawken) led the way, McMahon taking third place in the triple jump, and Tupta fifth in the shot put.

McMahon took third in the triple jump with an NCAC qualifying leap of 44-0, after taking 13th in the long jump with a distance of 20-3, also a league qualifying standard. Teammate Matt Yurky (Homer City, Pa./Homer-Center) finished behind McMahon in both events, taking 9th in the triple jump with a leap of 41-11.5, a conference meet qualifier, after leaping 19-11.75 in the long jump, just off of the league standard.

Tupta placed fifth in the shot put with a toss of 49-1.75, his second best this season, as teammates Pat Confer (Bradford, Pa./Bradford) and Devin Cruea (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) placed 13th and 14th in the same event, the former with a throw of 44-0.5 and the latter 43-4.5. Cruea later took eighth in the discus throw with a toss of 136-6, before Confer placed 10th in the hammer, tossing the implement 140-6.

Bobby Campbell (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) took 12th in the javelin throw with his second best toss of the season, 169-7.

Garret Piispanen (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument) took eighth in the 800-meter run, crossing the finish line in the two-lap event in an NCAC qualifying time of 2:01.07. Teammate Alex Rowland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area) followed up Piispanen’s mid-distance success with some of his own, as he took seventh in the 1,500-meter run, finishing in a personal-best time of 4:14.87.

Yurky, after his jumping events, took seventh in the 110-meter high hurdles, finishing the sprint in a time of 16.10.

The Gators look to regroup and travel south to the Indiana (Pa.) Invitational on Saturday, April 21.
