Field Events Pace Gators at SRU
April 15, 2007
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Emily Pfeufer (St. Mary’s, Pa./Elk County Catholic) had three top-three finishes on the day, while Liz Earley (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) met the NCAA Provisional mark in the hammer throw, as the Gators turned in strong performances at the Slippery Rock Open in Slippery Rock, Pa.
Pfeufer won the triple jump, an event that she is currently ranked fourth in Division III, with a leap of 36-1.25. She took second in the high jump with a lifetime-best leap of 5-3, as she now leads the conference in the event, before later took third in the long jump, narrowly missing the NCAA Provisional qualifying mark with a leap of 17-9. The NCAA “B” mark in the event is 18-1.5, as she is also just three quarters of an inch off of the top jump in the league this season.
Earley placed high in three events, including taking fifth place in the hammer throw, the event which she currently leads the nation by two feet. Earley’s toss of 160-8 is far enough to be the eighth best throw in Division III this season, but falls short of her school-record toss earlier this season.
Kristen Angelo (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) paced a trio of Gator throwers, including Earley and Sophia Braden (Farmington, Mich./Roeper), in the shot put and discus throws. In the shot put, Angelo’s toss of 37-2.25 took eighth overall with Earley (36-6.75) and Braden (35-8.5) placing 10th and 17th, respectively, as all three tosses met the NCAC Championship Meet qualifying standard. Angelo then led the three with a 10th place finish in the discus throw, tossing the implement 113-9, ahead of Earley (108-3) and Braden (102-4), as the three again all qualified for the league championships.
Katie Pankowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) placed third overall in the javelin throw with a toss of 122-4, as the Gators increased their already lengthy list of NCAC qualifiers with Emily Kiernan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) taking 14th overall with a toss of 99-6, giving the Blue and Gold five league qualifiers in the event.
Freshman Hannah Smith (Rice Lake, Wisc./Rice Lake) placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles, sprinting and leaping her way to a time of 16.28.
The duo of Rebecca Aiken (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and Sarah Holick (Hillsborough, N.J./Mt. St. Mary Academy) each ran to personal bests, qualifying for the NCAC Championships in the 400-meter dash, the former running a time of 1:01.15 and the latter 1:02.08.
Jessica Gratton (Bridgeville, Pa./Chartiers Valley) met the NCAC qualifying mark in the 400-meter hurdles, running to a time of 1:11.16, under a half second off of her personal best.
Kim Tranel (E. Dubuque, Ill/Wahlert (Iowa)) narrowly missed a personal best, but still met the NCAC qualifying standard for the first time this season in the 3,000-meter steeple chase, running the event in a time of 12:39.65.
Lindsay Svetlak (Lowellville, Ohio/Lowellville) placed fifth overall in the 1,500-meter run, taking to a new personal best time of 5:07.52, missing out on the conference qualifying standard by just over a second.
The Gators look to regroup and travel south to the Indiana (Pa.) Invitational on Saturday, April 21.
