Denison Gets by Gators 14-6
Apr 14, 2007 Box Score
MEADVILLE, Pa. – It was a much-improved second half by the Allegheny College women’s lacrosse team, but the host Gators couldn’t overcome a six-goal halftime deficit and eventually fell to Denison University 14-6 at Frank B. Fuhrer Field on Saturday, April 14.
Allegheny (2-7, 0-3 NCAC) struggled in the opening stanza with Denison (5-6, 3-1 NCAC), coming up on the short-end of several key statistical categories, including shots (19-10), draw controls (11-4), and free position shots (4-1). The Big Red controlled the tempo throughout the half, but the Gators managed to make it interesting early as Meg Grossman (Lexington, Ky./Sayre School) found Laura Hoch (Moon Township, Pa./Sewickley Academy) for a score before taking it in herself for a goal at 21:45, cutting the host’s deficit to 3-2.
Following a pair of Denison goals, freshman Christina Zanic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) netted her first goal of the game at 14:24, pulling Allegheny within two at 5-3. That would be as close as the Gators could manage as the Big Red scored five of the finals six goals to take a 10-4 lead into the break.
Allegheny switched goalies to start the final period and the change was effective in halting the Denison offense as freshman Rachel Coons (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) held the visitors off the scoreboard for the first 16 minutes of the half. Meanwhile, the hosts picked up the first two goals as Zanic tossed in her second at 28:09 and Cailin Harvey (Rochester, N.Y./Irondquoit) added her first goal of the year 10 minutes later.
The Big Red finally broke the egg in the second stanza with just under 14 minutes remaining as Read Powel and Krissy Frost tallied back-to-back scores just 19 seconds apart. Denison added two more goals in the final four minutes, while goalie Carolyn Hicks thwarted a flurry of late Gator attacks.
Powell, Frost, and Quinn Simmons each notched three goals for the visitors, while Becca Schoenherr tallied two goals and two assists. Powell helped the Big Red control the tempo by racking up nine draw controls, while Lindsay Buhr managed a game-high eight ground balls. Hicks was a force to be reckoned with in the Denison goal, making a game-high 13 saves, including 11 in the second half alone.
Grossman paced the Allegheny attack with four points coming on one goal and three assists, while adding a team-high two draw controls. Erin Foster (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) and Jenna Balogh (Richfield, Ohio/Revere) each tallied a team-best four ground balls.
Coons made nine saves in the second half to lead the Gators.
The Gators next take the field on Thursday, April 19, with a non-conference contest at Geneseo State University at 4:30 p.m.
