Allegheny Suffers 15-9 Setback at Kenyon

GAMBIER, Ohio – In its second North Coast Athletic Conference game this spring, the Allegheny College women’s lacrosse team trailed by just one goal at halftime against host Kenyon College, but the Ladies turned on the jets in the second half, doubling the Gators’ second-half score to grab a 15-9 victory.

Allegheny (2-5, 0-2 NCAC) held strong in the first half at Kenyon (3-4, 1-1 NCAC), taking the first lead on Ashley Hughes’ (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) first goal of the game at 23:46. The Ladies were quick to retaliate, knotting the equalizer just 26 seconds later.

The Gators grabbed the lead twice more in the second half on another goal by Hughes at 21:54 and a score by Laura Hoch (Moon Township, Pa./Sewickley Academy) at 18:57, but each time the hosts came right back with an answer, eventually knotting the game at 3-3 at 18:13.

Kenyon took its first lead with 17:34 on the clock on Amanda Drummond’s second goal of the first half before Michelle Dudevoir (West Point, N.Y./O’Neill) tied the game 4-4 at 15:51. The Ladies grabbed a 5-4 halftime lead on a goal by Frankie De Lavis with just over 10 minutes remaining in the stanza.

Allegheny stayed within striking distance early in the second half, maintaining the one-goal deficit through the first 10 minutes, but Kenyon notched eight of the final 11 scores of the game to secure the victory.

Hughes finished the day with five goals, upping her season total to a team-best 18. Dudevoir added one goal and two assists, while Meg Grossman (Lexington, Ky./Sayre School) tallied one goal and one assist.

Drummond and De Lavis each tallied six goals for Kenyon, the latter adding three assists and a game-high six draw controls. Jess Little tossed in a pair of goals for the hosts.

Junior Lesley Stange (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) took the loss for Allegheny, making nine saves, while Chase Kreuter tallied 15 stops for the victors.

The Gators pick up play next week at St. Vincent College on Thursday, April 12, at 4:30 p.m.
