PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Allegheny College juniors Liz Earley (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and Emily Pfeufer (St. Marys, Pa./Elk County Catholic) each met NCAA qualifying marks during the Carnegie Mellon Dual Meet, Earley breaking the school record and meeting a NCAA Automatic mark in the hammer throw with a toss of 173-2, while Pfeufer leaped to a distance of 38-0.25 in the triple jump, a provisional qualifying mark.

The Gators out-scored host Carnegie Mellon 94-76, and Geneva 97-64 as the meet pitted each of the three teams individually against each other. The meet, originally scheduled for Thursday, April 5, was moved forward two days due to an impending storm.

Earley dominated the throwing events, winning the hammer throw, shot put and discus, and placed fourth in the javelin, meeting the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) qualifying mark in the event. Her throw of 173-2 in the hammer throw broke her own school record of 166-2 set a season ago, as the junior currently leads Division III with the toss. In the shot put, Early out-distanced teammate Kristen Angelo (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) in the shot put, Earley tossing to a distance of 39-1.25 and Angelo 38-11.75. Earley and Angelo went 1-2 in the discus throw, Earley leading the pair with a toss of 123-3 and Angelo recording a throw of 119-0.

Senior Katie Pankowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) led the field in the javelin throw with a toss of 125-3 as teammates Jessica Pennisi (Milltown, N.J./East Brunswick) and Earley placed third and fourth, respectively, in the javelin throw, as the trio met the league qualifying standard.

Pfeufer brought home a pair of first place finishes, first with the long jump, where she and first-year Hannah Smith (Rice Lake, Wisc./Rice Lake) finished 1-2, Pfeufer leaping to a distance of 17-7.25 and Smith 15-11. Later Pfeufer took first in the triple jump, an event in which she has earned All-America honors during last season’s Outdoor National meet and the most recent indoor NCAA Championships. Her leap of 38-0.25 is currently the fourth best jump in Division III.

Sarah Holick (Hillsborough, N.J./Mt. St. Mary Academy) took the top spot in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes, winning the 200 in a time of 27.75 while running the quarter-mile in a time of 1:02.39.

The Gators won both hurdle events, as Smith and Jessica Gratton (Bridgeville, Pa./Chartiers Valley) went 1-2 in the 100-meter hurdles, the former sprinting to a time of 16.20 and the latter 16.69, both times meeting the NCAC qualifying marks. Liz Straus (Kirtland, Ohio/Kirtland) took the top finish in the 400-meter hurdles, running the one-lap event in a time of 1:09.38, while Gratton took third overall in a time of 1:10.86, as both also qualified for the league championships with their time.

Mia Symoniak (Snyder, N.Y./Amherst Central) and Scarlett Graham (Farmington, N.Y./Uniontown) paced the team in the distance events, as the pair took third and fourth, respectively, in the 1,500-meter run, Symoniak in a time of 5:01.10 and Graham 5:02.85. Graham took second in the 3,000-meter run in a time of 11:04.40, while Symoniak finished third in a time of 11:22.65.
