Gator Men Split at Carnegie Mellon Duals

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Allegheny College Gators split against a pair of matches on Tuesday evening at the Carnegie Mellon Dual Meet in Pittsburgh. The meet featured three teams, pitting each team against each other in a dual meet format.

The Gators beat Geneva 110-59 but fell to host Carnegie Mellon University 108-81.

The Gators took four of the top five places in the 3,000-meter run, with Ryan Place (Meshoppen, Pa./Elk Lake) and Ben Mourer (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) placing 1-2 in times of 8:53.94 and 9:00.83, respectively. After having a Geneva runner take third, Chris Corkins (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) and Matt Smith (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) took fourth and fifth in times of 9:07.75 and 9:10.04, each.

Sophomore Garret Piispanen (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument) took first overall in the 800-meter run, running the two-lap event in a time of 1:59.44, while Place took third overall in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:00.23.

Sophomore Matt Yurky (Homer City, Pa./Homer-Center) placed in the top three in four different events, including winning one, the long jump. He and teammate Joe McMahon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) took the top two spots in both of the horizontal jumping events, Yurky winning the long jump with a leap of 21-8, as McMahon leaped to a distance of 21-2 to place second. McMahon then exacted revenge in the triple jump, leaping to a distance of 44-4.75 in the triple jump as Yurky finished second with a distance of 43-3. In the 110-meter hurdles, Yurky finished two hundredths of a second from first place, running to a time of 16.02, before taking third in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing the lap in a time of 1:00.08.

The throwing trio of Frank Tupta (University Heights, Ohio/Hawken), Devin Cruea (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) and Pat Confer (Bradford, Pa./Bradford) each led the Gators in a different event on the day. Tupta took first overall in the shot put with a career-best distance of 50-4, while Confer took third with a toss of 45-4.25. In the discus it was Cruea that took center stage, winning the event with a personal-best distance of 142-9, before Tupta placed third with a toss of 131-10. Confer placed second in the hammer throw, an event in which he holds the school record, tossing a distance of 148-3, just under three feet off of the record.

Marcus Solomon (Rockwell, Texas/Dallas Christian) took second in a pair of sprint events, the 100- and 200-meter dashes, as the senior sprinted to a time of 11.51 in the shorter of the pair, and 23.29 in the 200-meter dash.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Solomon, Chas Moore-Seymore (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Francis), David Boger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and Jeremy Walker (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) took second overall in a time of 43.89, while Piispanen, Alex Rowland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area), Jamie Drab (North East, Pa./North East) and Alex Gorski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) took second in the 4x400-meter relay in a time of 3:33.80.

The Gators next take to the track on April 13 when the team travels to the Bucknell Distance Carnival before going to the Slippery Rock Invite a day later.
