Gators Cruise in NCAC Opener
Apr 3, 2007 Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box
OBERLIN, Ohio – Oberlin College hadn’t beaten Allegheny College in any of the teams’ previous 14 meetings and the Yeowomen weren’t about to do it Tuesday afternoon as the Gators pounded out 21 runs and 29 hits en route to a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep. Allegheny (7-11, 2-0 NCAC) took the first game 9-1 in six innings, before closing the nightcap with a 12-0 win in five frames.
After going down quietly with just one hit in their first turn at bat, the Gators erupted for runs in each of the final five innings of the opener. Clinging to a 2-1 lead after three innings, the visitors came out swinging in the fourth, putting up four runs on four hits, capped by a two-run home run by junior Crystal Ptacek (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny), the first longball of her career.
Sophomore Rachel Ryan (West Salem, Ohio/Northwestern) added to the lead in the top of the fifth, leading off the frame with her second home run of the spring. An inning later, Ryan plated another run with a triple and came around to score on a single by Emmalynn Sigrist (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) to close the scoring.
Ryan, Elizabeth Burr (Farmdale, Ohio/Badger), and Abby Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) each pounded out three hits in the game, with Ryan plating a team-best three RBI.
Freshman Alicia Morley (Sinclairville, N.Y./Cassadaga Valley) picked up the win, pitching all six innings and allowing just three hits, while striking out four.
Oberlin had no answer in the second contest as Allegheny picked up runs in each of the first four innings, highlighted by a seven-run second. The Gators sent a dozen batters to the plate in the inning, starting with freshman Maggie Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) who doubled. After Allison Burr (Farmdale, Ohio/Badger) singled, advancing Maggie Bodenlos to third, the Gator first-years pulled off a double steal to score the innings' first run. Freshman Katie Wills (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) followed with a two-run homer a short time later, keeping the offensive merry-go-round in motion.
Allegheny tallied two runs each in the third and fourth frames in support of freshman starter Allison Korotkin (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day) who improved her record to 2-1 this season with the four-hit shutout.
Rebecca Burns (St. Rogersville, Pa./West Greene) led the Gators with three RBI in game two, while six players tallied a pair of hits, including Sarah Reilly (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) who was a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Wills was also 2-for-2 with a walk and scored a team-high three runs.
Noteworthy, Abby Bodenlos swiped four bases on the day, putting her season total at 22 and tying the NCAC record for stolen bases in a single season. The Gator junior now has 48 steals in her career, moving her into third-place on Allegheny’s all-time list.
The Gators continue its NCAC slate this weekend, hosting a doubleheader against Kenyon College on Saturday, April 7, at 1 p.m.
