Mar 31, 2007

Box Score

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Allegheny College women’s lacrosse team received a career-high five goals from junior attacker Laura Hoch (Moon Township, Pa./Sewickley Academy), but it wasn’t enough to stop unbeaten Ohio Wesleyan University in the schools’ North Coast Athletic Conference opener on Saturday, March 31, as the Gators fell by a 17-8 score.

Ohio Wesleyan (4-0, 1-0 NCAC) got on the boards early and often Saturday morning, tallying each of the game’s first six scores goals before Allegheny (2-4, 0-1 NCAC) ever got on the board. Freshman Christina Zanic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) notched the Gators’ first score of the day at 16:23, her 10th goal of the spring.

The Battling Bishops added three more goals before Hoch tallied her first goal on a free position attempt at 5:59. Ohio Wesleyan tacked on another pair of goals to end the half with an 11-2 lead.

Allegheny came out with a flourish in the second half, netting each of the first three scores to cut the lead to 11-5. Hoch picked up the first two, the second coming via an assist by Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), while Hughes knocked home her team-leading 13th goal at 22:25.

The Bishops were far from done on the day, scoring each of the next four goals to take a 10-goal lead (15-5) with just over 11 minutes remaining. Michelle Dudevoir (West Point, N.Y./O’Neill) stopped the run with a goal at 8:55, just 1:20 prior to Hoch’s four tally of the day.

Ohio Wesleyan closed the scoring with a pair of goals sandwiched around Hoch’s final unassisted goal at 1:46.

Junior Lesley Stange (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) played all 60 minutes for Allegheny, posting 10 saves and scooping up a team-high five ground balls, while freshman Meg Grossman (Lexington, Ky./Sayre School) paved the way with two caused turnovers and three draw controls.

Allegheny resumes action next Thursday (April 5) with a non-conference contest at Notre Dame (Ohio) College beginning at 7 p.m.
