Allegheny’s Corkins Grabs Weekly Honor
March 27, 2007
MEADVILLE, Pa. – Allegheny College junior Chris Corkins (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) opened the 2007 outdoor track and field season on a high note, earning North Coast Athlete of the Week honors following his outstanding performance at the Point Loma Nazarene University Invitational in San Diego, Calif., on March 24.
Corkins earned the conference’s weekly accolade as a middle distance/distance competitor, leading the Blue and Gold to an impressive team finish in the 5,000-meter run. The Gator junior led a trio of teammates around the track with a career-low time of 14:57.93. Allegheny grabbed each of the top four positions in the race, and six of the top 10 overall.
It’s the start of another successful season for Corkins, as he has already tacked on a trio of All-NCAC honors and an all-region accolade from the cross country and the indoor track and field seasons. He was fifth at the NCAC Cross Country Championships and 11th at the regional meet, leading Allegheny to first- and second-place finishes, respectively. Corkins also helped lead the indoor track team to its unprecedented fifth straight conference title by earning All-NCAC accolades in the 3,000 meters (3rd) and 5,000 meters (1st), and finishing fifth in the mile.
Allegheny continues its outdoor track and field season on Thursday, April 5, taking part in a tri-meet with Geneva College and hosted by Carnegie Mellon University.
