Gators Open Outdoor Season

SAN DIEGO – Led by a top four sweep in the 5,000-meter run, and a near qualifying mark in the javelin, the Allegheny College Gators opened the 2007 outdoor track and field season in strong fashion at the Point Loma Nazarene University Invitational.
Leading the way for the men’s 5,000-meter was junior Chris Corkins (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) who ran to a time of 14:57.93, while Marco Dozzi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and Ben Mourer (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) placed second and third with times of 14:59.29 and 15:01.83, respectively. Ryan Place (Meshoppen, Pa./Elk Lake) took fourth overall, finishing the 3.1 miles in a time of 15:07.08.
Sophomore Bobby Campbell (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) nearly qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in the javelin throw, as his toss of 182-6 out-distanced his competitors by over four feet, and finished just under six feet from the NCAA Provisional mark of 188-0.
The Gators took two of the top three places in the hammer throw, with Devin Cruea (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) and Pat Confer (Bradford, Pa./Bradford) taking second and third, throwing to distances of 146-02 and 144-06, respectively.
Joe McMahon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) took second in the triple and third in the long jump at the meet. His leap of 45-3 in the triple jump was nearly five feet ahead of second place, while his 20-11.25 was just a half-inch from second place.
Frank Tupta (University Heights, Ohio/Hawken) and Cruea came back to take second and fourth in the shot put, the former leading the pair with a toss of 48-3.25, and the latter tossing the implement a distance of 44-3.50.
Garret Piispanen (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument) took second overall in the 1,500-meter run, racing to a time of 4:04.17.
Matt Smith (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) took second in the 3,000-meter steeple chase, finishing in a time of 10:11.60.
