Earley’s Provisional Mark Leads Gators

SAN DIEGO – Led by an NCAA Division III Provisional qualifying throw in the hammer from junior Liz Earley (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and a pair of first-place finishes from Emily Pfeufer (St. Mary’s, Pa./Elk County Catholic), the Allegheny College Gators ended a week of training in San Diego, California in strong fashion with their outdoor season opener at the Point Loma Nazarene University Invitational.
Earley, an All-American in the weight throw during the indoor season, took second in the hammer throw, tossing the implement a distance of 159-0, a distance that currently leads Division III. Earley later took fourth in the shot put with a distance of 39-7 and in the discus throw with a toss of 121-9.
Pfeufer picked up the first of her top finishes in the high jump, where she cleared a height of 5-0, out-leaping the competition by two inches. Teammates Carley Latus (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and Liz Straus (Kirtland, Ohio/Kirtland) finished close behind, the former taking third place, clearing a height of 4-10, while the latter took fifth with a height of 4-8.
Pfeufer later took first in the triple jump, an event that she earned All-America honors during the indoor season. The junior leaped to a distance of 36-9.5, almost a foot ahead of second place, while Hannah Smith (Rice Lake, Wisc./Rice Lake) placed fourth with a leap of 33-6.75. In the long jump, Pfeufer took second with a leap of 17-5.5, while Smith placed fourth, leaping to a distance of 15-6.25.
The Gators dominated the 3,000-meter steeple chase, as the Gators had four of the five entrants in the event. Andrea Patterson (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) took first overall in a time of 12:38.30, while Kim Tranel (E. Dubuque, Ill./Wahlert, Iowa) took third in a time of 13:02.90.
Latus followed her high jump performance by placing third in the 1,500-meter run, finishing in a time of 4:57.30, while Smith took third in the 100-hurdles, sprinting to a time of 15.96 after placing in the top four in the long and triple jumps.
Freshman Mia Symoniak (Snyder, N.Y./Amherst Central) placed third in the 5,000-meter run, covering the 3.1 miles in a time of 18:30.03.
Katie Pankowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) and Pfeufer took fourth and fifth in the javelin throw, with Pankowski, a senior, tossing the spear a distance of 116-02 and Pfeufer a distance of 114-04.
The Gators next take to the track on April 5, where they will travel south to Pittsburgh, Pa., to compete in the Carnegie Mellon Tri-Meet.
