Gators Drop Sixth Straight to Start Season

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Allegheny College baseball team dropped its sixth straight game to start the 2007 season today (March 21, 2007) to the Hope College Flying Dutchmen.
Eric Rich (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) went 3-for-4 from the plate, connecting on half of the team’s six hits, while freshman Matt Dishong (Venetia, Pa./Ringgold) started the game for the Gators, striking out four and scattering three hits in five innings of work, collecting the loss.
Dishong began his college debut with a three innings of shutout ball before surrendering four runs in the fourth inning. The Flying Dutch adjusted to Dishong their second time through the lineup, stringing together three hits, a walk, and had some help by way of an error to score the four times. Hope added another run against Dishong in the fifth inning to push their advantage to 5-0.
While the Flying Dutch were finding their grove at the plate, the Gators struggled to put much together against Hope’s Shawn Grose, who threw a complete game while striking out five.
The Gators finally broke through and ended the shutout bid in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Alex Herrnberger (Eighty Four, Pa./Canon McMillan) scoring Brian Schmidt (Utica, Pa./Franklin), who had reached on a fielders choice, advanced to second on a single and third on a hit-by-pitch.
The Blue and Gold continue play in Port Charlotte, Fla. on Friday for a NCAC double header against the College of Wooster at 12:30 p.m.
