Mar 21, 2007 Box Score
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Allegheny College women’s lacrosse team found itself on the verge of its third straight loss to open the 2007 season, trailing Frostburg State University through the first 57 minutes of action in the teams’ battle Wednesday morning. But junior Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) brought the Gators back from the brink, notching the game-tying goal with 2:30 remaining, and freshman Christina Zanic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) took care of the rest, connecting on the game-winning score with just 43 ticks left on the clock to give Allegheny a 13-12 victory.
Hughes picked up a team-best five goals on the day to go with one assist, giving the junior exactly 100 points in her career. She now has 69 goals and 31 assists, ranking eighth in the former and first in the latter in school history, and is the sixth Gator to eclipse the 100-point plateau in the programs’ 14-year history.
Allegheny (1-2) trailed the entire way against Frostburg (0-3), including falling behind 9-4 at the half. The Gators’ balanced attack won out in the second half, outscoring the Bobcats 10-4. Three players knocked home a pair of goals, including Zanic, senior Michelle Dudevoir (West Point, N.Y./O’Neill), and first-year Meg Grossman (Lexington, Ky./Sayre School).
Allegheny also received scores from juniors Laura Hoch (Moon Township, Pa./Sewickley Academy) and Lana Cannon (Peaks Island, Maine/Portland), the former adding an assist.
Junior goalie Lesley Stange (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) was unmovable down the stretch, stopping three shots with the game tied in the final two minutes. She finished the day with a season-high nine saves overall.
The Gators conclude their spring trip on Thursday (March 22) against Morrisville State University at 7 p.m.
