SALISBURY, Md. – The Allegheny College softball team closed its weekend trip to Salisbury University with a pair of losses on Sunday afternoon to the hosts. The Gators, who went 1-3 at the Sea Gull Invitational on Friday and Saturday, dropped to 1-5 on the season following 2-0 and 7-1 losses to the Sea Gulls.

Allegheny’s No. 3 and 4 hitters led the way against Salisbury (8-4) as junior Abby Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) and sophomore Rachel Ryan (West Salem, Ohio/Northwestern) each went 3-for-6 in the two games, while freshman Rebecca Burns (St. Rogersville, Pa./West Greene) also went 3-for-6, with all three of her hits coming in the night cap.

The Allegheny bats were silenced by Stacy Davis in the opener as the Sea Gull starter held the Gators off the base paths for the first three innings, eventually allowing only four hits and one walk in the game, while striking out seven. She managed to out-duel Allegheny starter Alicia Morley (Sinclairville, N.Y./Cassadaga Valley), who surrendered just two earned runs on six hits, while striking out two.

Down 1-0 heading into the fourth, the Gators appeared on the verge of at least knotting things up after three consecutive singles by Katie Wills (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour), Bodenlos, and Ryan with one out. The threat ended quickly, however, as Davis got a foul out and a ground out to third base.

Salisbury added an insurance run on a Nichole Fuqua leadoff home run in the sixth inning, before Allegheny threatened again in its last at bat. Ryan picked up her second hit of the day in the leadoff spot and advanced all the way to third on a miscue by the left fielder. That’s where the Gator sophomore stayed as Davis put down the next three batters on a pair of strikeouts sandwiched around a grounder to the mound.

Allegheny’s bats picked up the pace in the second game, managing 10 hits, but the visitors stranded nine runners on the bases. In her third start of the season, sophomore Becca Rich (Gibsonia, Pa./North Allegheny) was tagged with seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits in 4.2 innings of work. Freshman Allison Korotkin (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day) came in for the final four outs of the game, allowing just one hit and fanning two.

The Sea Gulls jumped in front with runs in each of the first two innings of the game, but the Gators cut the deficit to one in their half of the fourth. Burns doubled to left-center with one out and Maggie Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) followed with a run-scoring double to approximately the same spot, marking the Gator first-year’s second hit of the day and her first career RBI. Mirroring her sister Abby’s style of play, the younger Bodenlos stole third base to set up another potential run, but Sea Gull pitcher Kirsten Wells ended the threat with a pair of ground outs.

Salisbury added another run in the fourth before exploding for a pair of two-run home runs in the fifth inning to knock Rich out of the game. Allegheny put runners on base each of the final three frames, but to no avail.

The Gators resume play when they travel to Kissimmee, Fla., for the Rebel Spring Games on March 18-23. Allegheny will play 10 games over the course of six days, beginning on March 18 against Hamilton College at 9 a.m.
