Mar 10, 2007 Wilkes Box | Lynchburg Box
SALISBURY, Md. – The Allegheny College softball team fell to 1-3 on the season after dropping a pair of games at the final day of the Salisbury University Sea Gull Invitational. The Gators, who went 1-1 on the first day and advanced to the championship portion of the second day, fell 4-2 to Wilkes and 12-3 to Lynchburg.
In the first game, the loss to Wilkes, the Gators started the game quickly, as Rachel Ryan (West Salem, Ohio/Northwestern) drove in Katie Wills (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour), who had singled and stole second, giving the Gators a 1-0 lead through a half-inning.
On their turn at-bat, the Coloniels scored two runs, one on an RBI base hit, and the latter on a bases loaded walk, giving Wilkes a 2-1 lead. The teams settled down for the next inning and a half before Wilkes scored two more runs in the bottom of the third inning when Melisa Bracone singled in two runs, giving the hosts on the scoreboard their four runs in the contest.
The Gators countered with another run in the top of the fourth, cutting the deficit in half when Abby Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) singled on a bunt and promptly stole second base, her first of two stolen bases on the game, before Ryan drove in Bodenlos, giving Ryan her second run of the contest with a single through the left side.
The bats were silent for the rest of the game, as neither team was able to squeeze a run across the plate over the final two innings in the 4-2 Wilkes win.
Ryan and Bodenlos were each 2-for-3 from the plate, as the duo accounted for four of the team’s six hits in the contest. Wills and Stephanie Lasinski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) added the other two hits, as Willis also scored one of the team’s two runs while Bodenlos had a pair of steals, giving her a team-high five on the season. Becca Rich (Gibsonia, Pa./North Allegheny) picked up the loss for the Gators, pitching the entire six innings of the contest, striking out three and giving up just eight hits.
In the afternoon finale, Lynchburg, who has a record of 10-2 and finished the Invitational with the best record in the field, jumped on the Gators early, scoring 11 runs in the first two innings. Allegheny came back with three runs in the top of the fourth inning when Rebecca Burns (St. Rogersville, Pa./West Greene) grounded out to the shortstop with the bases loaded, scoring Wills, before Lasinski singled up the middle, scoring Bodenlos and Crystal Ptacek (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny), cutting the deficit to eight at 11-3. An inning and a half later, Lynchburg squeaked one more run across the plate, giving the game its 12-3 final score.
Allegheny was held to just two hits in the game, as Laskinski and Bodenlos had the base knocks. Alicia Morley (Sinclairville, N.Y./Cassadaga Valley) picked up the loss for the Gators, pitching an inning and allowing eight runs, six of which were earned. Rich came oin for an inning of relief, giving up just one hit but walking four and giving up three runs, none earned, before Allison Korotkin (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day) pitched the final three innings of the game in relief, striking out four and giving up just two hits over that span.
The Gators stay in Maryland another day, as they face off against tournament host Salisbury in a double header on Sunday starting at 11:00 a.m.
