Earley Grabs All-America Honors
March 9, 2007
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Allegheny College junior Liz Earley (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) became the first person in school history to earn All-America honors in the weight throw, finishing fifth at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind. It also marks the first national honor of the Gator junior’s career.
Earley, who came into the meet owning a school-record toss of 52 feet, 3.25 inches achieved at the Baldwin-Wallace Invitational on February 9 of this season, bested her personal mark by three feet on Friday, tossing the 20-pound weight a Herculean effort of 55 feet, 8.25 inches in her third attempt. She becomes the first Gator All-American in the weight throw since its inclusion as a championship competition in 1996, and she is the first Allegheny competitor to earn national honors in any indoor throwing event.
All four of the participants in front of Earley were seniors, including national champion Terri Schwamb from Wisconsin-Oshkosh, whose toss of 61 feet, 2.75 inches was 2 feet, 8.25 inches better than the second-place finisher from Bowdoin College.
Allegheny’s indoor season has one more hurrah left as junior Emily Pfeufer (St. Mary’s, Pa./Elk County Catholic) will compete in the triple jump on Saturday, March 10, at 11:30 a.m.
