Gators Take Early Lead at NCAC's

GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Allegheny College Gators hold a narrow lead heading into the second day of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championships, hosted by Denison University. The Gators scored two in three of the four events of the day, with juniors Emily Pfeufer (St. Mary’s, Pa./Elk County Catholic) and Liz Earley (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) each winning an event for the Blue and Gold.
The Gators take an 18-point lead into the second day of the championships, having scored 44 points, with Ohio Wesleyan and Denison tying for second place with 26 points. Wooster (24), Wittenberg (16), Oberlin (14) and Earlham (6) round out the competing teams through the first four events.
The Gators got the meet of on the right foot, as Pfeufer repeated as conference champion, leaping to a career-best, NCAA Division III Provisional mark and new NCAC record of 37-9 in the triple jump, winning the event by over a foot and a half. Freshman Hannah Smith (Rice Lake, Wisc./Rice Lake) placed fifth overall with a leap of 33-2.25.
Earley took first in the shot put with a toss of 41-0, while freshmen Sophie Braden (Farmington, Mich./Roeper) and Kristen Angelo (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) placed third and fifth, respectively, the former with a throw of 36-6 and the latter 35-10.25.
Michelle Corkum (MacMurray, Pa./Peters Township) and Mia Symoniak (Snyder, N.Y./Amherst Central) placed third and fourth in the 5,000-meter run, Corkum running to a time of 18:55.02 and Symoniak finishing the 3.1-mile race two seconds later in a time of 19:01.69.
Competition continues tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. with the long jump, and will conclude at approximately 5:25 with the 4x400-meter relay.
