Pair of Thinclads Earn Weekly Honors
Feb 21, 2007 MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny College indoor track and field team continued to roll through its 2006-07 season as two members of the men’s squad earned North Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week honors following their performances at the Kent State Tune-Up meet on February 16. Freshman Josh Brannan (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) picked up his first honor in the sprint/hurdle events, while sophomore Joe McMahon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) earned the honor as a competitor in the field events.
Brannan, right, set a new school record in the 200-meter dash, racing out to a 22.76 to best the 2004 mark achieved by RaShawn Allen. He finished 19th overall in the event, but fifth among NCAA Division III competition. Brannan also competed in the 1600-meter relay, helping the squad finish 12th overall in a time of 3:30.49.
McMahon, left, continued his impressive second campaign as a Gator in the triple jump and the long jump. The sophomore, who already holds the Allegheny record in the triple jump at 46 feet, 7.75 inches, wasn’t quite up to his career best, but his leap of 44 feet, 11.5 inches was good enough to earn fourth among the talented field. McMahon also notched a top-10 finish in the long jump, finishing eighth overall with a distance of 21 feet, 2.5 inches.
The Gators have one more meet before taking part in the 23rd NCAC Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Denison University on March 2-3. On Friday, February 23, Allegheny will compete at the Oberlin Last Chance Meet hosted by Oberlin College.
