BEREA, Ohio and BOSTON – The Allegheny College Gators split their squad on Friday night, with individuals competing at both the Baldwin-Wallace Mid-February Invitational and at the Boston University St. Valentine Invitational.

The Gators sent four athletes to Boston, with Garret Piispanen (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument) placing 54th in the 800-meter run with a career-best time of 1:57.53. Also competing in the half-mile was junior Craig Ball (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills), who finished with a time of 2:01.95.

Chris Corkins (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) and Marco Dozzi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) each competed in the 5,000-meter run, with Corkins finishing the 3.1 miles in a time of 15:00.04, placing 27th, and Dozzi, a 2006 All-American in cross country, in a time of 15:08.14, for 35th place, both times marking career bests.

At the Baldwin-Wallace Invitational, a pair of relays led the way for the Gators, with the Blue and Gold picking up victories in both the 4x200- and the 4x400-meter relays at the meet. The team of Josh Brannan (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe), Chas Moore-Seymore (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Francis), Marcus Solomon (Rockwell, Texas/Dallas Christian) and Jeremy Walker (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) won by nearly eight seconds in the 4x200-meter relay, finishing with a time of 1:33.68.

Bobby Campbell (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional), Jamie Drab (North East, Pa./North East), Ben Eyer (Lititz, Pa./Manhem Central) and Alex Gorski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) teamed to take first in the 4x400-meter relay, with Gorski crossing the tape in a time of 3:40.16.

Allegheny swept the top two spots in the pole vault, with Peter Sotherland (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) and Erich Wittmer (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) tying for the top spot, each clearing 13-4.25.

Senior Devin Cruea (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) placed second in the weight throw with a toss of 54-3.75, his second best on the season, and a foot away from the top finisher.

The Gators dominated the mile run, as the Gators took three of the top four places in the event. Ben Mourer (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) placed second overall with a time of 4:29.86, two hundredths of a second from the first place finisher from Fredonia State. Matt Smith (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) and Ryan Hanson (Presto, Pa./Chartiers Valley) placed third and fourth, respectively, Smith running a time of 4:33.14 and Hanson a 4:35.78. Hanson also placed fourth in the 1,000-meter run, finishing in a time of 2:53.31.

Brannan and Walker finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 55-meter dash, the former sprinting to a time of 6.75 and the latter a time of 6.77. Brannan then placed third in the 200-meter dash, sprinting the one-lap event in a time of 23.19.

Sophomore Matt Yurky (Homer City, Pa./Homer-Center) led the way in the jumps for the Blue and Gold, placing second in the triple jump with a career-best leap of 41-10.75, while also taking fourth in the long jump, leaping to a distance of 19-9.

Tom Lee (Mt. Vernon, Ohio/Mt. Vernon) placed fourth in the 5,000-meter run at B-W, finishing the 3.1 miles in 16:27.97.

The Gators next take to the track on February 16 when the team travels to Kent State University to compete at the Kent State Tune-up Meet.
