Kestler’s Record Overshadowed by Loss

Feb 3, 2007

Boxscore

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Senior Katie Kestler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) set Allegheny College’s single-season record for three-pointers made at Wittenberg University, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the hosts as the Gators fell 71-47 on Saturday afternoon in a key North Coast Athletic Conference match up for both teams.

The Gators (14-7, 8-5 NCAC) slipped into fifth in the conference standings for the time being behind The College of Wooster (12-8, 7-4 NCAC), which squares off with league-leading Denison University (18-3, 12-0 NCAC) on Saturday night. At 8-4 in the NCAC, the Tigers (11-9) slide into a tie with Ohio Wesleyan University (13-8, 8-4 NCAC) for second place in the NCAC.

Allegheny never held the lead or manage a tie against Wittenberg, falling behind by five (15-10) in the first six minutes of the game. The Tigers pushed the advantage to double-digits at 23-12 with an 8-2 run to 11:31, but the Gators closed to within seven following Kestler’s second three-pointer of the half. That would be as close as the visitors would get the rest of the half as Wittenberg opened up a 10-point lead (35-25) at the break.

Allegheny cut the deficit to nine several times in the opening minutes of the first half, but the Tiger-lead ballooned to 21 (55-34) following an 11-0 run down to 12:05. Wittenberg maintained at least a 16-point advantage the rest of the way.

With a pair of three-pointers, Kestler passed her own single-season mark of 55 set each of the past two seasons. She led Allegheny with 10 points on the day and tied for the team-lead with four rebounds.

Senior Meghan Vasilisin (Munhall, Pa./Oakland Catholic) chipped in with nine points, while Becca Gasiewicz (Grove City, Pa./Kennedy Catholic) added eight points for the visitors.

Wittenberg, which out-rebounded the Gators 41-25 in the game, was led by Katie Gregorivich with team-highs of 18 points and six rebounds. Kathy Hittle added a dozen tallies, while Andrea Hackett contributed 11 points and a game-high three steals.

Allegheny wraps up its three-game road trip at Wooster on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 6 p.m.
