Boxscore

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Allegheny College women’s basketball team connected on a season-high 12 three-pointers, including six alone by senior Katie Kestler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon), en route to a 69-62 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over host Kenyon College (7-10, 4-4 NCAC) Saturday afternoon. The win moves the Blue and Gold to 12-4 overall on the season and 6-2 in the NCAC.

Allegheny’s three-point barrage was three better than its previous high this season and was just one off the school record of 13 set against Oberlin College last winter. The Gators connected on 12-of-22 attempts with all the good buckets coming from a trio of players. Kestler finished 6-of-10 from behind the arc as part of her game-high 20 points, while senior Becca Gasiewicz (Grove City, Pa./Kennedy Catholic) and freshman Brittany Bell (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) each added a trifecta of threes en route to 13 and nine points, respectively.

The hosts ran off to a quick 12-5 lead to start the game, only to see Allegheny jump ahead 16-15 following back-to-back three-pointers by Bell. The Ladies jumped right back with an 11-0 run to take a 10-point lead (26-16) at 7:25. With the deficit remaining 10 points with just over five minutes to play in the opening period, the Gators mounted a furious comeback, scoring 13 of the final 17 points to go down by just one (34-35) at the break.

Allegheny grabbed its second lead of the game early in the second half at 38-37 on a Kestler three-pointer and extended the advantage to seven (46-39) down to 12:30. Kenyon still had some fight left, however, reversing the score in their favor with an 18-4 run to take a seven-point lead of its own with five minutes left to play.

Kestler’s sixth and final longball of the day ignited the Gator offense once again as the visitors reeled off a 19-5 run to end the game, including a pair of three-pointers by Gasiewicz which gave Allegheny the lead for good 63-62 with 37 seconds left. Six free throws by Meghan Vasilisin (Munhall, Pa./Oakland Catholic) and Stephanie Wolf (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) sealed the conference win for the visitors.

Wolf joined Kestler and Gasiewicz in double figures with 13 points, hitting 3-of-6 field goals and 7-of-8 at the charity stripe, as well as adding five rebounds. Gasiewicz contributed a game-high seven rebounds in the win, while Vasilisin tallied six points and six boards.

Kenyon, which connected on 9-of-18 three-point attempts, was led by Alisha Morena with 15 points. Eva George added 13 points, while Hilary Gowins tallied a dozen points and five assists.

Next up for the Gators is a home date with The College of Wooster on (8-8, 3-4 NCAC) on Wed., Jan. 24, at 6 p.m.
