Gators Share the Wealth against Oberlin

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny College women’s basketball team ended a two-game skid by racking up a season-high 25 assists as part of a 78-55 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over visiting Oberlin College (5-9, 1-6 NCAC) at the David V. Wise Center on Wednesday night.

The Gators, who improved to 11-4 and 5-2 in the NCAC, picked up assists on 25 of 30 field goals in the game, besting their previous high of 20 set in the first game of the season. Three players reached double-figures for the hosts led by freshman Brittany Bell (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) who matched her season-high with 14 points in 17 minutes.

After trading opening buckets, Allegheny ran off to a quick 11-point cushion (19-8) seven minutes into the first half. The Yeowomen stayed within striking distance, cutting the margin to 28-21 at 4:41, but the Blue and Gold reeled off a 16-4 run to end the opening stanza with a comfortable 44-25 advantage. The 44 points was a first-half season-high for the Gators.

All 15 of Allegheny’s field goals were assisted in the first half, and the streak continued well into the second until a put back by Stephanie Wolf (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) at 13:39. Meanwhile, the margin never dipped below 14 and extended to as many as 25 (74-49) before both coaches emptied their benches.

Eleven Gators reached the scoring column against Oberlin, led by Bell who connected on a three three-pointers and added four rebounds. Senior Katie Kestler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and Wolf also reached double-digits with 11 and 13 points, respectively, with the former contributing five assists and the latter eight rebounds and four helpers.

Senior Meghan Vasilisin (Munhall, Pa./Oakland Catholic) chipped in with nine points and Becca Gasiewicz (Grove City, Pa./Kennedy Catholic) contributed seven points and six rebounds. Seeing her first action of the year, junior Lauren Burdelsky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood) tallied six points and four rebounds, and despite not reaching the scoring column, sophomore Maggie Mucha (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) tied for the team lead with five assists.

Oberlin was led by Roneisha Kinney who finished 7-of-12 from the floor for a team-high 14 points. Alyssa Clark added 11 points, while Jessie Oram contributed eight markers and four rebounds.

The Gators connected on a season-high 55.6 percent of their field goals, finishing 30-of-58 from the floor and 9-of-21 from behind the arc. Additionally, the Blue and Gold held a substantial advantage on the glass against the NCAC’s top rebounding team, corralling 41 rebounds to Oberlin’s 30.

Allegheny continues its conference schedule this weekend with a road trip to Gambier, Ohio, on Saturday, Jan. 20, to battle the Ladies of Kenyon College at 1 p.m.
