Gator Women Advance to Finals in Texas

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – The Allegheny College women’s basketball team improved to 9-1 on the season with a 71-62 victory over the Saints of Maryville (Mo.) College. Also with the win, Gator head coach Jennifer Reimer tied the program record for coaching wins with 110.
Katie Kestler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) scored a team-high 16 points while Jennifer Latronica (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) and Stephanie Wolf (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) each had double-doubles, the former with 14 points and 10 boards and the latter 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Maryville started the game scoring ten of the first 15 points, taking a five-point lead, increasing their lead to as many as six halfway through the period. The Gators fought back, leading three times in the last 10 minutes of the first period, each time by a solitary point, as the Blue and Gold went into the locker room at halftime trailing 34-33.
Allegheny controlled the play early in the second half, opening a four-point lead with 14:21 to play in the contest. The lead fluctuated back and forth with the Saints holding a 58-57 lead with 5:54 in the game before Allegheny scored the next 11 points, opening a 68-58 lead five minutes later. The Gators then hit five of eight free throws to ice the game in the 71-62 win.
The rims were merciless to the Gators, as the Blue and Gold hit just 24-of-70 shots from the field, and 18-of-37 from the charity stripe, however, the team was able to force 26 turnovers by way of 14 steals, and out-rebounded the Saints by three, 52-49.
Hilary Collins (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) scored a season-best nine points while dishing out eight assists, as Rosina Walton (Ingomar, Pa./North Allegheny) scored a season-high eight points. Kestler had five individual steals, while Wolf and Becca Gasiewicz (Grove City, Pa./Kennedy Catholic) each grabbed four steals.
With the win, Reimer passes her predecessor, Laurel Heilman, with 109 career wins at Allegheny, and ties Ronda Seagraves, who coached from 1986 until 1992. Overall Reimer has a career record of 110-60 in her six and a half years at the helm of the program.
Reimer gets a chance at breaking the record tomorrow, as the team takes on the winner of the Messiah (Pa.) and Pitt-Bradford at 2:00 p.m. in the Gators’ final game of the South Padre Island Shootout.
