Academic Awards Lauded on Soccer Teams MEADVILLE, Pa. – The 2006 soccer season may be in the bags, but Allegheny College isn’t done making headlines as the school was just one of 49 teams across the nation (all divisions) to earn National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Awards for both its men’s and women’s programs. In addition, three individuals earned NSCAA/adidas® Scholar All-East Region from the men’s team, including seniors Daniel Carik (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and Mark Dobish (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington Area) and junior Eric Sloan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon). To be eligible for the team award, a squad had to maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average for the 2005-06 academic year. Both Gator programs easily accomplished the feat, with the men tallying a team GPA of 3.05 and the women standing at an impressive 3.16. Noteworthy, Allegheny is the only school from the North Coast Athletic Conference to have both of its programs land team academic honors from the NSCAA. Carik, Dobish, and Sloan add more hardware to already burgeoning trophy cases from the 2006 season. Carik was tabbed honorable mention All-NCAC, while Dobish and Sloan each landed first-team accolades from the conference as well as third-team All-Great Lakes Region honors. Carik, Dobish, and Sloan, who are majoring in political science, economics, and chemistry, respectively, easily eclipsed the minimum 3.30 GPA required for the scholar awards.
