KENT, Ohio – A day after seeing the weight throw record set and a near qualifier in the 5,000-meter run, the Gators continued their success at the Kent State University Golden Flash Gala, as two Allegheny athletes set career highs, and others setting the tone for a successful indoor track season.
Chris Corkins (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads), a day after running the 5,000-meter run, placed third in the 3,000-meter run, crossing the finish line in a time of 8:51.67, just shy of his time at the NCAC Championships a season ago. Matt Hoy (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) also ran the nearly two-mile event in under nine minutes, finishing with a time of 8:59.90, winning the second heat of the event.
Joe McMahon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin)) set a new career high, narrowly missing the school record in the triple jump with a leap of 44-11.75, placing fifth overall in the competition.
Matt Yurky (Homer City, Pa./Homer-Center) took 11th in the 60-meter hurdles, running a time of 8.87 in the finals.
Garret Piispanen (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument) placed seventh in the mile run in a time of 4:33.71 before coming back and placing tenth in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:58.66, better than his season best from a year ago.
Frank Tupta (University Heights, Ohio/Hawken) took 12th in the shot put with a toss of 47-2.25, while teammate Pat Confer (Bradford, Pa./Bradford) finished with a toss of 43-1.75.
The Gators take a month off, before traveling to Fredonia, New York to compete at the Fredonia State Invitational on January 20.
