KENT, Ohio – Allegheny College senior thrower Devin Cruea (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) led off the 2006-07 track and field season in grand fashion, as he broke the school record in the weight throw at the Kent State University Golden Flash Gala.

Cruea, who earned All-NCAC honors last season in the discus throw, tossed the weight 48-2.50, surpassing the record of 46-10.25 set last season by Kitt Tuttle. Overall Cruea placed 20th in the competitive field. Also competing in the event was senior Pat Confer (Bradford, Pa./Bradford), who placed second in his flight and 27th overall with a toss of 45-2.50, a new career best.

Junior Ryan Place (Meshoppen, Pa./Elk Lake) won the 5,000-meter run, but missed the NCAA Division III provisional mark by just a quarter of a second in the 3.1-mile race.

The junior, who placed sixth at the NCAA Division III Cross Country nationals two weeks ago, won in convincing fashion, finishing over 25 seconds ahead of the second place competitor. Place finished with a time of 14:48.25, 15 seconds better than his previous career high, however the provisional mark for a 300-meter track in the event is 14:48.00.

Overall nine different Allegheny runners competed in the 5,000-meter race, with Chris Corkins (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) taking third in a time of 15:16.70. Matt Hoy (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon), Marco Dozzi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and Matt Smith (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) placed 12th, 13th and 14th, in times of 15:42.01, 15:43.27 and 15:44.40, respectively.

Competition continues tomorrow, December 9 at the Golden Flash Gala.
