Comeback Falls Short in Allegheny Loss
Nov 4, 2006 Boxscore
GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Allegheny College Gators (11-5-3) recovered from a 2-0 second-half deficit to knot the game at two goals apiece and send the game to an extra period, before falling in overtime to the Big Red of Denison University (11-4-2) by a 3-2 score.
Denison wasted no time in reaching the scoreboard, as Ryan Linn followed up a Luke Lennox shot that hit the far post, and buried the shot into the back of the net, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead 3:26 into the contest. That one goal lead would last for the remaining 41 minutes of the first half, as the Gators went into the break trailing 1-0.
Denison used a goal just eight minutes in the second half to open a 2-0 lead, as David Folt took a free kick from teammate Andy Leindecker and beat Allegheny goalkeeper Ryan Larkin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) into the far side of the net.
The Gators closed the gap when Jeremy Garbutt (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) picked up a loose ball in the box, and beat Kevin Donahue, the Denison keeper, to the empty left-hand side of the net with 11:28 left on the clock, cutting the Gator deficit in half at 2-1.
Two and a half minutes later Chris Fedele (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville) took a rebounded Alan Carr (Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy) shot and buried it into the net, knotting the game at two apiece.
The game would keep its 2-2 score for the remainder of the second half, and through the first 6:43 of the overtime period, before Linn scored his second goal of the game, when he streaked down the right side of the field, and buried a shot into the far corner, giving Denison their first-ever NCAC Tournament title.
The shot battle in the game was even throughout in the physical game, as each squad had 15, in 1 game that saw 37 fouls and four yellow cards.
