Gators and Tigers Battle to 0-0 Tie
October 28, 2006
MEADVILLE, Pa. - Allegheny College may have played spoiler for the second time this week as the host Gators held Wittenberg University, which entered Saturday's contest tied for the top spot in the North Coast Athletic Conference, scoreless in a 0-0 tie at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
Allegheny closes its season with 10-7-1 overall record, including a 3-4-1 mark in conference play.
The Tigers (12-3-3, 5-1-2 NCAC) move into the top spot at least temporarily with third-place Kenyon College playing Earlham College at 1 p.m. Should the Ladies win, they would leap over both The College of Wooster and Wittenberg for the regular season championship and the top-seed for the conference tournament.
The Gators and Tigers traded blows for much of the game, with neither side gaining a clear advantage. Wittenberg had several key opportunities late in the second stanza, but Allegheny keeper Michelle Welker (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) notched three of her game-high eight saves in the period.
One of the best opportunities for the Gators to get on the scoreboard came late in the second overtime period on a free kick. Senior Emily Spencer's (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) shot, the only attempt by the hosts in the period, sailed high over the net.
The Tigers held a 13-7 advantage on shots and a 7-6 edge on corner kicks.
Spencer accounted for three of Allegheny's shots, while Lindsey Rusch led the visitors with four.
