October 25, 2006

Boxscore

WOOSTER, Ohio – Despite being eliminated from the North Coast Athletic Conference playoff chase, the Allegheny College Gators (10-7-0, 3-4-0 NCAC) were able to play spoiler to another team, as The College of Wooster’s (12-5-1, 5-2-1 NCAC) chance to win the conference went awry with a 3-0 Allegheny win.

Christy McShea (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) had a hand in all three Allegheny goals, assisting the first two before scoring the third, improving the team to 9-0 on the year in which she scores a goal.

The Gators got in the scoring action early in both halves, as Meghan Borden (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford) picked up a rebounded shot attempt from McShea and beat Wooster keeper Staci Alario, giving the Blue and Gold the eventual game-winning goal just 9:42 into the contest.

The remaining time over the first half went scoreless, before Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) took a pass from McShea and booted the ball from 25 yards out, ricocheting off the right post and into the net just 2:12 into the second period. The Gators kept their foot on the gas pedal, as McShea found the back of the net when she picked up a loose ball at the top of the box, beating Alario into the upper left corner of the net.

The three goals was the second highest total put on the Scots this season, and it was just the third time that the offense, the conference leader in points per game, has been shut out. Freshman goalkeeper Michelle Welker (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) stopped all seven shots on goal for the Gators, picking up her seventh shutout of the season, tied for the third highest single season total in school history.

The Gators conclude their 2006 season on Saturday, October 28 looking to play spoiler once again, as the team takes on the Tigers of Wittenberg University (12-3-2), currently in a tie for first place with the Fighting Scots, with kickoff set for 11:00 a.m. at the newly renovated Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
