Oct 17, 2006 Boxscore
MEADVILLE, Pa. – Despite out-shooting Oberlin College (6-8-1, 1-3-0 North Coast Athletic Conference) 35-5, including a 13-3 margin on goal, the Allegheny College (9-6-0, 2-3-0 NCAC) women’s soccer team fell 2-0 to the visiting Yeowomen at Frank B. Fuhrer Field on Tuesday night.
Three Allegheny players, Katie Murphy (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), Christy McShea (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) and Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) each either out-shot or tied the shot total of Oberlin individually, with eight, seven and five shots, respectively.
The two teams played through the first 45 minutes of the game in a scoreless tie, despite Allegheny out-shooting Oberlin by a 15-1 margin.
At the start of the second half the Yeowomen put together their first real threat of the contest, and scored when Joelle Sesar found Betsy Leach in the box for a header that was put past the diving Michelle Welker (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield).
With the Gators pushing the ball, the visitors got a counter opportunity and took advantage with just 8:04 left on the clock when Sesar took a breakaway down the right side, and then beat Welker towards the far post.
Oberlin goalkeeper Sarah Grabinski picked up 13 saves on the day, a season-high in the NCAC this season, while Welker stopped one.
The next game for the Blue and Gold is on Friday, October 20, when the team travels south to Delaware, Ohio to face off against the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan University with kickoff set for 5:00 p.m.
