Gators Grab Victory No. 10 at Earlham
October 14, 2006
RICHMOND, Ind. – The Allegheny College men’s soccer team picked up its 10th victory of the season on Saturday afternoon, converting a pair of corner kicks as part of a 3-0 shutout of Earlham College in North Coast Athletic Conference action. The Gators are now 10-2-2 overall on the season and 4-2 in league play.
Allegheny has won 10 or more games in five of the last six seasons under head coach Angelo Panzetta and Saturday’s contest against the Quakers was never in doubt. Earlham (6-8-0, 1-4-0 NCAC) couldn’t generate much offense against the Gators’ formidable defense, managing just five shot attempts and two corner kicks.
On the other side, Allegheny has notched six goals over its last two contests, with half of those scores coming via corner kicks. Sophomore Nathaniel Yates (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) picked up the first and only goal of the first half at 19:28, knocking home a pass from senior Mark Dobish (New Wilmington, Pa./New Wilmington) from the left corner.
In the second half, senior Daniel Carik (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and junior Jeremy Garbutt (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) hooked up for the second consecutive game on a boot out of the right corner in the 64th minute. It marked Cariks’ third goal of the season off a corner kick, while Garbutt recorded his third assist.
Sophomore Jim Beyer (Pittsford, N.Y./Mendon) put the final tally on the board just past the 78-minute mark for his fourth goal this fall.
Junior Ryan Larkin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) registered his seventh shutout already this fall, tying him for second on Allegheny’s all-time list, just one behind L.J. Marks’ total during the 2001 season. Larkin stopped three Quaker shot attempts, while lowering his goals against average to 0.56.
The Gators get a week off before a key NCAC match up against Denison University (7-4-1, 4-1-0 NCAC) on Saturday, October 21, in Granville, Ohio, at 1 p.m.
