HIRAM, Ohio – The Allegheny College Gator women’s soccer team snapped a two-game North Coast Athletic Conference losing streak with a convincing 5-0 victory over the Terriers of Hiram College (3-10-1. 1-3 NCAC) on Wednesday afternoon. Christy McShea (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) scored her team leading seventh goal of the season as the Blue and Gold, 8-5 overall and 1-2 in league play, are now 7-0 when the sophomore reaches the back of the net.
McShea’s goal, assisted by Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), 22:10 into the game proved to be the game winner. Katie Murphy (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) then scored back-to-back goals, the third time this season she has scored multiple goals in a game. The first of the pair came 35:33 off of a direct kick, before scoring 7:08 into the second half off of a pass from Emily Spencer (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen).
Hughes and Jillian Bolton (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton Central) scored their fifth and second goals of the season, respectively, adding insurance in the lopsided win. The Gators out-shot the Terriers 23-6 in the contest, while shutting the hosts out in corner kicks 6-0.
Freshman goalkeeper Michelle Welker (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) picked up her fifth shutout of the season, dropping her goals against average to 0.71, stopping all three of the shots on goal in the win.
The next game for the Blue and Gold is on Saturday, October 14 when the team travels to Richmond, Indiana to take on the Quakers of Earlham College in the first game of a women’s/men’s double header starting at noon.
