MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny College women’s soccer team came up just a score short Saturday afternoon, as 10th-ranked Denison University held the Gators out of the scoring column in securing a 1-0 victory in a North Coast Athletic Conference contest at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.

Allegheny (7-5, 0-2 NCAC) went on the offensive early, firing off the game’s first shot, but the Big Red (10-1, 2-0 NCAC) quickly took control. Denison out-shot the hosts 25-4 in the game, as well as taking 15 corner kicks compared to zero for the Gators.

The Big Red picked up the only goal via one of those corner attempts in the first half. Katie Eckenhoff lined the ball right in front of the Gator goal to a waiting Kim Cochran for the header.

Denison, which tallied a dozen shots in the second half, had its fair share of opportunities to extend the lead, but the Allegheny defense held firm behind freshman goalie Michelle Welker (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield), who was one off her career-high with eight saves. Noteworthy, the Big Red’s high-powered offense, which entered the game averaging over three goals, was held to less than two scores for just the third time this season.

The Gators made several offensive moves down the stretch, including sophomore Christy McShea’s (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) only shot of the game, but Big Red goalie Liz Gillette smothered the attempt for her second save of the day.

Allegheny continues its conference schedule on Wednesday, October 11, as the team travels to Hiram College for a 4 p.m. match up.
