Gators Win Physical Bout with Wabash
Sep 30, 2006 Boxscore
MEADVILLE, Pa. – In between 44 fouls, three yellow cards, and one red card, the Allegheny College men’s soccer team pulled out a 4-1 victory over visiting Wabash College in North Coast Athletic Conference action at Frank B. Fuhrer Field on Saturday (September 30) afternoon. The Gators evened their conference mark at 1-1 this fall and improved to 7-1-2 overall with the win.
It didn’t take long for the scoreboard to light up as Wabash (1-8-1, 0-1-1 NCAC) struck just 1:37 into the contest as George Padgitt headed a ball into the right corner of the goal. Allegheny wasted no time in tallying the equalizer, putting a marker on its side of the board just 23 seconds later as senior Mark Dobish (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington Area) knocked home his third goal of 2006 on a breakaway.
That was just the start of a first-half offensive surge by the hosts as three more goals hit the back of the net in the period Junior Nathaniel Yates (Cleveland Hts., Ohio/Cleveland Heights) notched his first goal of the season in the 15th minute on a one-timer from Ryan Kelly (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle), while just two minutes later, senior Alan Carr (Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy) put the hosts up 3-1 with his team-best fourth goal of 2006.
Allegheny capped its highest scoring output this fall with a penalty kick at 35:29 by senior Eric Sloan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon). Sloan’s blast went into the upper-left section of the goal for his second goal this season.
The second half turned into a physical battle as the two sides combined for 25 fouls and three cards. After the Gators picked up a red card with just under 17 minutes remaining in the game, Wabash made several attempts to take advantage of the man-up situation, but Allegheny’s defense held firm behind Sloan, Daniel Carik (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley), and Jeremy Garbutt (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School), squashing all the Little Giants’ offensive moves.
Gator starting keeper Ryan Larkin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) made one stop to earn the decision, while sophomore Zane Miller (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Wellington School), seeing his first action of the season, stopped the only shot attempt on goal he faced.
Allegheny continues its conference schedule on Tuesday, October 3, with a home night game at Frank B. Fuhrer Field against Oberlin College at 7 p.m.
