MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Carnegie Mellon University Tartans snapped Allegheny College’s six game win streak with a 2-1 victory in double overtime on Tuesday afternoon. Carnegie Mellon used a pair of goals, the first with 9:17 left in the game and the second just 2:06 into overtime to take the win.

The two teams played to a scoreless tie at halftime, as the game looked to continue the run between the two teams where each of the most recent three games ended in overtime. The Gators (6-3-0) struck first in the game, ending the scoreless tie, when Sara Beth Berner (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall), pictured, took a pass from Meghan Borden (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford) and beat Carnegie Mellon (4-3-1) goalkeeper Christie Adams just 6:14 into the second half.

The Tartans, who out-shot Allegheny in the game by a 17-3 margin, struck gold with 9:17 left in the game when Kasey Stever scored her third goal of the season, knotting the game at one apiece. Neither team could find the net in the first overtime, with CMU attempting two shots, one of which hit the cross bar.

In their first attack of the second overtime, Carnegie Mellon found the net when Abigail Coffin scored her second goal of the 2006 campaign, on her fourth shot of the game, giving the visitors the 2-1 victory.

Berner had two of the team’s three shots, while Katie Murphy (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), the reigning NCAC Player of the Week, had the third. Michelle Welker (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) picked up her first loss of the season, falling to 6-1 between the pipes, despite stopping a career-high nine shots.

The Gators next take to the pitch on Saturday, September 30 when the team plays host to NCAC foe Kenyon College in the conference opener for Allegheny in the first game of a women’s/men’s double header. The women’s game is slated for 11:00 a.m. on the natural grass of Robertson Field, while the men’s game is set to kick off at 1:00 p.m. on the FieldTurf surface of Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
