CLEVELAND, Ohio – Allegheny College had a pair of student-athletes earn weekly honors from the North Coast Athletic Conference for their respective performances in varsity competition last week. Senior Scarlett Graham (Farmington, Pa./Uniontown) and sophomore Katie Murphy (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) were tabbed NCAC Athletes of the Week for women’s cross country and women’s soccer, respectively, as announced by the conference office on Monday, September 25.
Graham earned her first weekly award of 2006 as the top Allegheny harrier at the NCAA Division III Pre-National meet hosted by Wilmington College on Friday, September 22. The Gator senior covered the 6,000-meter course in a time of 22:43.49, placing her 14th overall among the 181 competitors and propelling the team to a seventh-place finish in the 15-team field. Individually, Graham has been the top finisher for the Gators in all three races this fall, including a season-best finish of fifth at the NCAA Pre-Regional meet on September 16.
Murphy was a big reason for Allegheny’s 2-0 week on the soccer pitch, as the sophomore midfielder accounted for two goals and two assists in wins over Penn State Behrend (3-0) and Washington & Jefferson College (4-1). She assisted on the Gators’ second goal against the Lions on September 21 and followed up with a career-high five points against the Presidents just two days later. Murphy has taken over the team-lead in scoring with 12 points this fall on four goals and four helpers, all of which have come during Allegheny’s current six-game winning streak.
