Sep 23, 2006 Boxscore
DELAWARE, Ohio – For the eighth time in nine matches this fall, the Allegheny College men’s soccer team out-shot its opponent, but for the first time this season the offense came up short as the 19th-ranked Gators were handed their first loss of 2006 at the hands of No. 3 Ohio Wesleyan University 2-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both schools at Delaware, Ohio. Allegheny sees its eight-game unbeaten streak end and falls to 6-1-2 and 0-1 in league play, while the Battling Bishops keep their record perfect at 7-0, 1-0 NCAC.
The hosts connected on two of their three first half shots, beginning in the 11th minute with Will Murawski’s right-post goal. Just 16 minutes later, Ohio Wesleyan stretched its lead to 2-0 as Nick Markovich scored on a pass from Brandon Bianco.
Allegheny had its share of opportunities, firing off nine shots in the first half and another dozen in the second, but Bishop goalie Jamison Dague refused to give in, tallying a game-high five saves.
The Gators finally got on the scoreboard with just under six minutes remaining in the contest as senior Alan Carr (Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy) notched his team-best third goal of 2006, converting a cross from the right side by Eric Sloan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon).
Allegheny, which controlled corner kicks 9-3, but committed four times as many fouls (21-5), couldn’t find the equalizer down the stretch to send the game to overtime.
The Gators will have a week off to recuperate from the loss as their next game will take place next Saturday, September 30, against Wabash College at Frank B. Fuhrer Field, beginning at 1 p.m.
