Gators Stay Hot with 3-0 Win at Behrend
September 21, 2006
ERIE, Pa. – The Allegheny College women’s soccer team continued its hot streak by winning their fifth-straight contest, this time handing host Penn State Behrend a 3-0 loss Thursday evening in Erie, Pa. The Gators ran their record to 5-2 this fall with the win, while the Lions dropped to 3-3-1 overall.
Three players – Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), Christy McShea (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional), and Katie Murphy (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) – had made their way into the scoring column for Allegheny this fall, but on Thursday evening two more Gators put their names in the books.
Freshman Ashley Miller (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) notched the game’s first tally in the 31st minute off an assist by sophomore Jillian Bolton (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton Central). The play marked both Miller’s first career goal and Bolton’s first career assist.
The Gators tacked on two more scores in the second stanza, the first coming from McShea at 62:57, while Sara Beth Berner (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) booted home her first goal of 2006 about 17 minutes later. Murphy and McShea, who tied Hughes for the team-lead in goals with four, were credited with assists on each play, respectively.
That was plenty of room for the Gator defense to work as it logged its third shutout in the last five games. Allegheny held the hosts without a corner kick for the entire 90:00, and out-shot the Lions 16-11. First-year Gator goalie Michelle Welker (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) made six saves and lowered her goals against average to 0.40 this fall.
Allegheny returns to the friendly confines of Robertson Field this Saturday (Sept. 23) with a non-conference contest against the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson College (5-3-1) at 11 a.m.
