Nationally Ranked Squads Split in Berea

BEREA, Ohio – In a match pitting nationally ranked and undefeated teams, neither team was able to put a loss on the other, as the 12th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jackets and the 19th-ranked Allegheny College Gators ended 110 minutes of fiercely competitive action in a 1-1 tie on Wednesday evening.

The Yellow Jackets (7-0-1) reached the scoring column first when Allegheny goalkeeper Ryan Larkin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) fouled a Yellow Jacket inside of the box, before Todd Alexander beat Larkin with the penalty kick, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead with 46 seconds left in the first half.

The Gators countered with a goal of their own 3:25 into the second half, barely giving fans enough time to reach their seats for the second half, as James Fulton (New York, N.Y./Friends Seminary) eluded his defender with a one-touch move before feeding the ball across the box where Eric Sloan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon), pictured left against John Carroll earlier this season, buried the shot into the back of the net, past BW’s keeper Alex Stavros.

Defense reigned supreme for both squads following Sloan’s goal, with neither the remaining 41:35 in the second half, nor either of the 10-minute overtime periods able to produce another goal, sending the teams home with the split.

Larkin recorded a career-high eight saves in the contest, as the Yellow Jackets narrowly out-shot the Gators 14-11. Stavros ended the game with six saves.

The Blue and Gold continue their most trying week of the season, traveling to Delaware, Ohio on Saturday, September 23 to face off against third ranked Ohio Wesleyan University with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
