Place, Toner Pick Up NCAC Weekly Honors

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Allegheny juniors Ryan Place (Meshoppen, Pa./Elk Lake) and Andy Toner (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) were lauded as North Coast Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week following their individual performances in their respective sports this past weekend. Place was picked as the men’s cross country runner, while Toner was tabbed football’s defensive representative as announced by league officials Sunday (Sept. 17) evening.

Place tallied his first individual win of 2006 as he led the Gators to a second-place finish at the NCAA Pre-Regional meet hosted by Waynesburg College. The Allegheny junior ran the eight-kilometer course in 26:06.84, eight seconds better than his nearest competitor and tops among the field of 141.

It was a record-tying day for Toner, who equaled a school mark with three interceptions in a 52-7 victory for the Gators over Hiram College. Two of his three picks turned into Allegheny scores, including the last in the third quarter which he ran back 30 yards for his first career touchdown. Toner also added six tackles, including four solo efforts.
