MEADVILLE, Pa. – Junior Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) ripped the game-winning goal 2:44 into the first overtime, giving Allegheny College (4-2) a 2-1 victory over Frostburg State University (1-4) in non-conference women’s soccer action at Robertson Field Saturday afternoon.
The Gators won their fourth-straight contest thanks to Hughes, who notched both goals to take over the team lead with four this fall. After a scoreless first half, the speedy junior broke the ice with a lob over the Bobcat keeper and into the left corner of the goal in the 55th minute. Meghan Borden (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford) picked up the assist on the play after corralling a loose ball off her own corner kick and sliding the pass to a waiting Hughes in front of the goal.
Allegheny’s lead was short-lived, however, as Frostburg took advantage of a miscue by goalie Michelle Welker (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) just 1:24 later. Welker failed to scoop up a loose ball and Amanda Drake was able to swipe it away and dribble the ball into the back of the Gator goal.
That was all the scoring either team could manage during regulation, despite the hosts firing off 27 shots. Bobcat keeper Molly Whyte made 12 of her game-high 13 saves during the first 90 minutes, while Welker tallied three stops.
At the beginning of the extra session, Allegheny controlled the ball offensively and converted the game-winner at 92:44 as Hughes struck again. This time she took a pass from the middle of the field and raced paced two defenders before slicing an arcing shot over the keeper into the right corner.
The Gators will aim to keep their hot streak intact with a road trip to Penn State Behrend next Thursday, Sept. 21, at 4:30 p.m.
