MEADVILLE, Pa. - A 45-minute delay didn’t stop the 16th-ranked Allegheny College men’s soccer team from defeating Mount Union College in a close battle on Wednesday night as the Gators’ Chris Fedele (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville) kept the hosts unbeaten this fall with a score in the 86th minute. Allegheny moves to 5-0-1 on the season, while the Purple Raiders drop to 1-3-1.
Mount Union struck first with a breakaway goal by Trevor Beach eleven minutes into the game. The goal marked the end of the Gator defense’s scoreless streak at 474:39.
Allegheny answered with a goal in the first half from Jim Beyer (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) off a Jeremy Garbutt (St. Louis, M.O./John Burroughs School) corner kick. Beyer went top-shelf with the ball, marking his second-straight contest with a goal and tying him for the team-lead with two this fall.
The hosts fired off a dozen shots at the Raider goal in the first half, but none found the mark as the score stood deadlocked at the halftime buzzer. What was a 10-minute break quickly turned into a 45-minute delay as the surrounding area was consumed by a thunder storm.
After the lightning and rain subsided, the Gators came into the second half strong, but failed to connect on several scoring opportunities. The Mount Union goalkeeper, Eric Sebor, made several point-blank saves to keep the game tied.
After 85 minutes of intense soccer had passed, Allegheny scored the go-ahead goal when Fedele slapped home a loose ball following a Mark Dobish (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) corner kick with four minutes remaining in the game.
The Gators dominated nearly all aspects of the game, out-shooting the visitors 31-7 and taking 11 corners kicks compared to just one for the Raiders.
Ryan Larkin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) picked up the win by stopping three shot attempts, while Sebor was tabbed with the loss despite making seven saves.
Allegheny looks to extend its unbeaten streak this Saturday, Sept. 16, when they pay a visit to the Pioneers of Marietta College. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
