Gators Continue Shutout Streak Against Greensboro
September 10, 2006
SALEM, Va. – The 25th ranked (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) Allegheny College Gators improved to 4-0-1 on the 2006 season with a 2-0 victory over the Pride of Greensboro College on Sunday afternoon in their final game of the Roanoke Invitational.
With the shutout win, the Gators have held their four most recent opponents scoreless, having gone 463:47 without allowing a goal. Olivet has been the only team to breach the Gator defense this season, scoring just 6:13 into the season opener.
The Gators got on the scoreboard first in the second day of the invitational when sophomore Jim Beyer (Pittsford, Pa./Pittsford Mendon) took a pass from Mark Dobish (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington Area) and put it past Pride keeper Kurt Gardiner with just under 15 minutes left on the first-half clock.
Dobish gave the Gators an insurance goal in the 74th minute of the game, when he dribbled past a Pride defender, and buried a shot into the back of the goal, giving the Blue and Gold a 2-0 lead. The defense tightened after that, as the Pride was allowed just seven shots on the game, four on goal, with none finding the back of the net.
Junior goalkeeper Ryan Larkin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) picked up his fourth consecutive shutout, dropping his season goals against average to a paltry 0.19, stopping four shots on the game.
For their performances at the tournament, Larkin, Dobish, and Daniel Carik (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) were all named to the All-Tournament team.
The Blue and Gold next take to the pitch on Wednesday, September 13 when the team plays host to the Purple Raiders of Mount Union College with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.
