MEADVILLE, Pa. – In the first night contest ever held at the newly renovated Frank B. Fuhrer Field, the Allegheny College women’s soccer team put on a stellar performance against visiting Westminster College, sending the Titans packing with a 3-1 decision on Saturday night. It marks the first loss of the season for the Titans (2-1-1), while the Gators even their record at 2-2.
Sophomore Katie Murphy (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) provided the bulk of the offense with her first two goals of the season. The first score of the game came via a penalty as the Gators’ Meghan Borden (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford) was fouled while making a move in the box midway through the first half. Murphy stepped up to take the penalty and smashed the shot into the lower left corner.
After holding on to a 1-0 lead at the break, Allegheny jumped ahead 2-0 on a nifty pass and finish by junior Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and sophomore Christy McShea (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) in the 55th minute. Hughes controlled the ball down the left side of the field and sliced it to a streaking McShea down the middle, who beat a pair of defenders and put just enough juice on the shot to squirt out from underneath the goalkeeper’s grasp.
Murphy added an insurance goal later in the second stanza as Borden was once again taken down in the box. After her initial penalty attempt was swatted away by the goalie, Murphy stepped up and slam dunked the shot into the corner of the net, giving the Gators the 3-0 advantage.
Westminster managed to get on the board with just over six minutes to play as Kait Etzel-Hardman found Kristen Martin on the left wing, but the hosts stymied any further attempts to pick up their second straight win.
Freshman Michelle Welker (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) picked up the win in her second straight start by stopping four Titan shot attempts.
The Gators are on the road for their next affair as they travel to Grove City College on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 4:30 p.m.
