Allegheny Cracks National, Regional Polls

Sep 6, 2006

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny College men’s soccer team earned recognition for their 2-0 start by being placed among the top 25 in the nation and top five in the Great Lakes Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s first poll of the 2006 season. The Gators tied for 25th in the national poll, while regionally, they earned a fourth-place nod.

Allegheny opened the year with a 2-1 decision over Olivet College on the opening day of the Fred Myers Tournament hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University on Sept. 1-2. Day two of the event saw the Gators add victory No. 2 against Wis.-Oshkosh, tacking on a goal midway through the first half and holding on for the shutout.

Perennially ranked among the top-10 in the region, Allegheny reaches the national poll for the first time since the end of the 2004 season. That year, the Gators were crowned North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament champions and reached the sectionals of the NCAA Division III Tournament en route to finishing 19th in the final poll by the NSCAA.
