MEADVILLE, Pa. – After 110 minutes of men’s soccer action at Frank B. Fuhrer Field, the first ever at the renovated stadium, only zeroes graced the scoreboard as Allegheny College and John Carroll University battled to a 0-0 tie in a physical contest that featured 31 fouls, three yellow cards, and one red card.
The Gators (2-0-1) remained unbeaten this fall, but they had plenty of opportunities to jump ahead during regulation, out-shooting the visitors 10-6 over the first 90 minutes. Senior Alan Carr (Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy) accounted for a team-high three shots, including two point-blank shots at the goal. One of those sailed over the net at the start of the second half, while the second was probably Allegheny’s best scoring attempt on the day. With 4:28 remaining, Carr, left, broke past the defense and skirted the ball past the diving Blue Streak ‘keeper. The shot was just off the mark, however, bouncing off the right post.
John Carroll (0-1-2) had no easy solution to get passed the Gator defensive unit and goalie Ryan Larkin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin). Larkin, right, halted the only shot attempt on goal, while Jeremy Garbutt (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School), Daniel Carik (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley), Chris Fedele (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville), Eric Sloan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon), Ryan Kelly (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-LaSalle), and Pat Bowman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bowman) suppressed any Blue Streak offensive moves.
Early in the first overtime, a John Carroll red card gave the man-up advantage to Allegheny, but the visitors held firm behind goalie Matt DeMarchi, who tallied one of his game-high fives saves in the extra sessions.
The Gators travel to Virginia this weekend (Sept. 9-10) for a pair of contests. First, they face host Roanoke College at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, and then on Sunday, Allegheny takes on Greensboro College at 12:30 p.m.
